Climate Change Christmas

The Copenhagen summit has been and gone. It is so important that there is a global agreement moving forward to reduce global warming – how much nearer are we now to this? The accord did manage to get nations together and a pledge to prevent global temperature rises in the future of over 2 degrees above pre industrial level but there are no legally binding obligations or even targets for global and national reductions or a time line for this. Hardly a SMART objective! I try to do my bit – buying locally sourced food supports local business as well as reducing food miles; getting all the family to close doors and turn lights off when they leave a room; getting better lagging for the roof and choosing a low emission car when I recently changed it. We can all make some difference.

There are some things, however, that raise issues in my mind. There have always been fluctuations of temperatures over millions of years so what portion is natural fluctuation and what is caused by human intervention? Added to this are the quoted statistics – today I heard that there is only a six degree difference between the ice age and now. Two degrees is apparently the magic figure that must be achieved to avoid catastrophic change. As there have only been official recorded temperatures relatively recently, do we really know what temperatures were then? What really annoys me is that it is not deemed acceptable now to raise questions about this – the PC brigade want to deny any debate.

It does make me wonder what effect this will have on Santa…

CLIMATE CHANGE CHRISTMAS

Santa’s at the North Pole
So where is the snow?
The toy factory is melting
What will the elves do?

Rudolph’s getting ready
With his friends and sleigh
If there is no snow out there
Can he make his way?

What clothes will Santa wear
To cope with warmer weather
With his rotund stomach
Trunks made out of leather?

We all need to help Santa
To do his vital role
To take all childrens’ presents
To every single soul

So let’s all go our little bit
Preventing climate change disaster
For Santa to continue
The sleigh rides he shall master

A very Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you all, your friends and families and look forward to 2010!
