Humanity, humility and humour
This month, I had the pleasure and privelage to attend a truly once in a lifetime experience which shall remain with me for the rest of my life. Along with thousands of other people in a packed Nottingham Arena, I went to see the Dalai Lama.
The vision of him on the stage will always stay with me. His sheer charisma and presence filled the room. I shall always remember him with his flowing burgundy and gold gown with matching burgundy sun visor ( honest ! ) in a yoga position in a huge chair surrounded by flowers, trees and a symbolic backdrop.
His humanity, humility and humour shone through in the sessions. His infectious laugh will always be remembered. He spoke on a number of issues but the one core issue that stuck with me was his concentration on positive mental attitude, something I have always believed in.
As he has also outlined in his book; The Art of Happiness – A handbook for living ( co- authored by Howard C. Cutler ), he claims that the most important factor in life is to be happy and that genuine happiness must come from within. Compassion and confidence play an important part in achieving this aim.
He went on in the second session to speak of inner peace and fulfillment. I particularly liked his comment here when asked a question about fear of death. He replied “If I live another 10 years – great. If I live another 20 years – great. If I die tomorrow, no regrets.” Again, the importance of positive attitude was emphasised including that he believed that education today does not pay enough attention to inner values.
His third session on how to lead an ethical life concentrated on living in moderation and helping and serving others, the key importance of motherly love for lifetime and the need to love yourself in order to give of your best to others.
His thoughts around the importance of respecting other religions and traditions rather than trying to convert people and emphasis on ethics and spirituality rather than religion was inspiring.
I have been fortunate to have many happy moments in my life and hope and plan for many more. This experience of seeing such a special man has certainly been one of the highlights. For June, may peace and happiness be with you and all your loved ones.
If you did not have the opportunity to attend and would like further information, the sessions were filmed and recorded. They will be available from the following :-
