SNOW WAY TO START A NEW YEAR

What a difference a few inches of snow make! Only last month, I wrote about the PC reluctance of challenging climate change theory. Less than two weeks and a few inches of snow and the lowest temperatures in the UK for decades, we are now apparently heading towards a new mini ice age. Apparently, an alternative theory based on natural cycles in water temperatures in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans with oceanic cycles of “warm modes” and “cold modes” are responsible with CO2 emissions only playing a small part. Whatever the truth turns out to be, I welcome the acknowledgement that there may be other causes involved and climate can be challenged. I did love the satellite image of the whole of Britain covered with a duvet (too thick to be a blanket) of snow.

With the exceptional weather, I don’t really feel I have started the new year properly yet. The diet resolutions have fallen by the wayside as it only seems right to eat and drink comfort foods until the temperatures increase substantially.

The naughties seem to have flown by – it seems like yesterday when we were celebrating the new millennium. If I had to choose the most significant issues over the decade, it would be the domination of IT, awareness of green issues and the election of Barak Obamah.

I’m not always good at keeping new year resolutions but I am a true believer in planning what you want for the year. If you know what you want to achieve, you are far more likely to achieve it or make steps towards your goal. I am determined to upskill my IT this year – get a new laptop, log on to Facebook and get an iPhone as opposed to my ancient Nokia. My daughters have promised to upskill me with all these.

On the fitness front, I did pretty well last year and got down to my target weight but this went to pot from November till the end of the year and needs to be re lost. I did increase fitness a bit as well – a big thank you to Wes and his excellent Tai Chi beginner class in Trebeck. If you are interested, he is starting a new beginners’ class in Newark soon.

It looks as if 2010 should be an interesting year nationally with an election coming up and internationally with Google vs China regarding censorship and all sorts of other challenges to keep us on our toes.

What we can all do; though, at the beginning of the year is resolving to make life a bit better for all around us. Some help for neighbors in this bad weather, a resolve from each family member to make a small difference to save energy and just a smile and pleasant word to spread good will all helps to make a more pleasant world for everyone.

Very best wishes to you all for a happy and healthy new year and decade.
