BLADES, BETTY DRIVER AND BERLIN TIME
It’s hard to believe that this is my 50th column for Southwell Muse – time has flown by so fast and so much has changed in my life over the last 50 months. At first, as this was a completely new venture, I was not sure if I could find something different to write about every month but there always is something new to discuss or issues to be re – visited. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed doing the column every month and hope you enjoy it too.
Last month, I had the most amazing, exciting and exhilarating experiences of my life. I went flying with The Blades, all ex – Red Arrows who have formed a civilian version of this. Went for the full experience – looped the loop, flew upside down, rolled over in the slow and fast version, did crazy flying and loved every second of it. If you ever, ever get the chance to do fly with The Blades, I urge you to go for it and raise money for their charity, Royal Air Forces Association at the same time. They do corporate days also and I so hope that my new manager takes up the challenge of making it a prize for the company top team!
It’s always sad when an acting icon dies and Betty Driver / Williams certainly comes into this category. I watch very little television and even less soaps but the one I do occasionally catch up with is Corrie and she has been a stalwart there for so many years. Corrie has changed a lot but retains more humour than the others rather than just being sensational for the sake of it. I remember seeing an interview with her a while back – she was a very striking lady in her early years and her character just shone through to the end. May she rest in peace.
Finally, hurrah to MP Rebecca Harris who has raised the Daylight Saving Bill in Parliament again. In certain circles it is being billed “Berlin Time” which I personally feel is an absolute disgrace as all the benefits are being belittled by Euro sceptic “we will be like Germany” rhetoric. I so believe in the benefits to the majority of people in the UK of getting an extra hour of daylight in the winter and two extra hours of daylight in summer. Less energy would be needed and more time for being outdoors in spring / summer. There would be business benefits with synchronised working time zones but it is the personal extra time that I would so relish. I shall be contacting Rebecca Harris to support her and Patrick Mercer to find out his views on the issue as well. If you agree with this proposal, please do the same.
Here’s to a happy and mellow autumn and run – up to Christmas...
